The story sounds almost as if it was from a history book…Jews fleeing their homeland due to an oppressive environment where their very safety is in question. But, here we are in 2012 and that is exactly what has happened with the few remaining Jews left in Yemen. Though most have found their way to Israel, we learned recently that nine families were settled in a New York City suburb where they now find themselves in a difficult situation.
Despite the help of several local agencies, some of the families are struggling to survive; a few owe thousands of dollars in back rent, others are unable to provide enough food for their large families.
When we heard about this situation from a trusted source our immediate response was to ask if there were needs that even local agencies were having difficulty trying to meet. The answer was simply “yes”, and that is how the Good People Fund, partnering with another resource, was able to provide funds to keep a Yemenite family in their rented U.S. home!
